Another black man shot dead by police. Another mob of angry rioters. It’s happening all over again. It seems as though not a day passes by without hearing about something terrible going down in the USA. I guess you could say violence and death have become the new normal. It was only less than two months ago that 6 law enforcement officers were shot – three fatally – in Baton Rouge, Louisiana after the officer-involved killing of Alton Sterling on the 5th of July. It seems as though every time an African-American gets shot by a cop that we can expect to see a riot happening within days of the incident occurring.
As I write this, news reports are rolling in of the terrible chaos going on right now in Charlotte, NC which comes in the wake of the shooting death on Tuesday of Keith Lamont Scott, 43, who police say was armed and ignored commands to drop his weapon. Scott’s family says the father of seven had a book in his hand. Apparently Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Kerr Putney, at a news conference Wednesday, rejected claims Scott was holding a book and not a gun, and said detectives had recovered the gun.
According to USA Today, a civilian involved in the protests was shot Wednesday night in a civilian on civilian exchange of fire and is now on life support. At this stage 16 police officers have been injured by protestors throwing rocks and other objects. Protestors even attempted to throw a news photographer into a burning fire on Wednesday night.
In addition to all of this mayhem, one group of protestors thought it was a really smart idea to use the riots as an opportunity to loot a Wal-Mart store, stealing expensive technology items such as a flat screen TV and iPads. Meanwhile others hurled “rocks, bottles and traffic cones off interstate overpasses” onto innocent motorists down below causing injuries and damage.
This latest spate of violence has prompted NC Gov. Pat McCrory to declare a state of emergency (martial law) and begin the process toward deploying the National Guard and the state Highway Patrol to assist local police, the governor said via Twitter.
Those of us who have woken up to the sorry state of America and the rest of this planet will ask “What’s going on with America?”, “Why all this constant violence and bloodshed going on?” Why, why, why and a thousand other questions.
To the principled person, this kind of behaviour is totally mindless and senseless. Why is it that people think the death of black man justifies throwing rocks at police officers and innocent motorists? Why is it that they think it is right to break into a Wal-Mart and steal goods? None of these terrible acts can bring justice for Kevin Lamont Scott.
There’s always going to be these messed up people who think it’s smart to use chaos as an opportunity to take advantage of others and this is yet another perfect example.
Law and order has simply broken down and this is a symptom of a bigger problem, the extremely serious moral crisis that America faces. Beyond the shadow of a doubt police brutality in America has certainly spiraled way out of control big time but as with every problem, there’s a root cause behind it and that problem is found within people’s hearts. It’s called sin and it’s the driving force behind why people commit acts of murder, violence, destruction and utter depravity.
Moral decay comes as a direct result of parents failing to train their children in the fear of the Lord, it comes as a result of senior cops failing to teach their officers to defuse situations peacefully instead of pulling out their guns and tazers on everyone and everything and abusing their power. It comes as a result of hatred and discrimination against black people. It comes as a result of humanistic education in our public schools and universities which produces kids who lack basic literacy, problem solving skills, the ability to think and causes them to be so confused about their genders. It comes as a result of failing to recognise the sanctity of human life. It comes down to a lack of respect for people despite their age, position, race, colour and creed. And the list goes on and on!
America is very literally falling apart at the seams right before our eyes and it’s only going to get much worse. This is what happens to a society that thinks it’s a smart idea to totally reject God and His laws that are in place for the good of all humanity. Without God, everything is meaningless and will inevitably result in failure. Rioting, looting, shooting, fighting and killing people simply will not solve anything – they’ll only exacerbate the problem further. What America and the rest of this world needs is humble repentance and revival. We need to return to God as the source of our everything and only then will we understand and experience true love, peace, harmony and tranquility for all. Is it too late for America yet? I don’t know. Only God knows. But what I do know is that God is not mocked and we will reap what we sow. That is a solemn reminder for each of us because change starts at an individual level. It starts with you and me!
